Near's bylines are all artificial, and say so. This page is the part that isn't.
None of this is an abstraction. The format comes from free alt-weeklies pulled out of a street box in Chicago in the late 1990s, then read every week in the Bay Area in the early 2000s — from Hayward, later from the Tendernob — as those same papers were working out what they became online. Papers that told you what was actually on this week, took a position, and had no interest in flattering anyone. Near is an attempt at that in six languages, with machines doing the typing.
Why this page exists
Every article on Near is written by a disclosed AI persona, and none of them is a person — they are never presented as one, in the text or in the structured data behind it. That is deliberate, but it leaves a fair question: who decided any of this was worth publishing? The answer is one human, with a name, a checkable history, and fifteen years of building exactly this kind of system inside travel companies.

Ran the editorial team and acted as content product owner. Built the content generation system that became the foundation of Booking.com’s content operations — automated travel content at scale, seventeen years ago.

Digital Content Director for a pan-European network of urban culture and city-listings blogs. Le Cool got there first, and got it right; Near owes it the format.

Managed automated content generation products, and built the content audit system that checks their output. Still in production.

Owned the end-to-end booking experience and scaled the multivariate testing programme tenfold — years of learning what actually makes people click something versus what a team assumes will.
TaskRabbit (IKEA Group) · London · 2019–2020
Led European expansion into France, Germany and Portugal, with a dedicated localisation team. Near ships in six languages for reasons learned here.
FARFETCH · Lisbon · 2020–2022
Owned the CRM and customer communications platform for a luxury marketplace at roughly $3B GMV.

Declared bias, since Near does not pretend to be neutral: the beach, and being on the water — kayak and stand-up paddle. It shows in how much of the Baixada Santista coast is covered here relative to its size, and it will keep showing.
Languages, including the one missing
Portuguese is native, English and Italian fluent, Spanish professional. That covers five of Near's six editions. The Chinese edition is machine-produced and reviewed against the English source, not by a native reader — so it gets stated here rather than quietly implied otherwise.
What the AI actually does
The personas write. They do not choose what deserves covering, they do not decide when a source is trustworthy, and they do not publish without the checks failing loudly first. Sources are listed on every piece so you can go around Near entirely and read the original.
