Clube do Samba sits at Largo Terreiro de Jesus, in Pelourinho, a few doors from O Cravinho on the same square. SAN

Rio Vermelho's late-night constant

Rio Vermelho's LGBTQIA+ nightclub, anchoring the neighborhood's late nights for years.

SAN sits on R. Conselheiro Pedro Luiz in Rio Vermelho, Salvador's bohemian late-night neighborhood, a few blocks from the water. It's one of the city's established LGBTQIA+ nightclubs — a lounge space with a light-effects dance floor and DJs mixing electro through most of the night, not a pop-up or a seasonal thing.

Trancoso

The Square Everyone Photographs, Nobody Explains

A 1583 mission square gone jet-set runway. The grass is old; the exclusivity is new.

One photo keeps surfacing from Trancoso: a wide grass square, low houses in ice-cream colors, a white church at the far end, someone barefoot in linen walking toward the camera at golden hour. It reads like a set. It isn't — the square is 440 years old and the crowd walking through it is maybe 25.
