Balcão — Comida de Rua

A no-tables counter on the Arpoador corner. The cheapest thing on it is the one to order.

Reasons to check it out

  • Falafel is the cheapest line on the menu in one of Rio's most expensive postcodes — R$9.90 for four when CNN Brasil listed prices in July 2025, so treat that as a floor rather than today's number
  • R. Francisco Otaviano, 52, Loja D, on the corner of Raul Pompeia — the Arpoador original, four minutes from the beach
  • No table service. Two self-order kiosks, a counter, green stools, and pita baked daily on site
  • Open Tuesday to Saturday 11:00–22:00 and Sunday 11:00–21:00 per the restaurant's own site; closed Mondays
  • Expect a line at peak. Near's curator, who eats here, reports it moves — but that arriving at opening is the way to skip it
  • Three more units since: Ipanema (opened May 2025), Leblon, and Centro inside Terminal Menezes Cortes

I live at the other end of this beach, where a sandwich costs what this whole meal costs, so take the following as a man from Leblon telling you where the money isn't going. At Balcão, order the falafel.

It is the cheapest thing on the board and the thing the kitchen is best at, which is a rarer alignment than it sounds. A number, with its date attached: CNN Brasil listed four falafel at R$9.90 on 11 July 2025, the kebab at R$29.90, a bowl at R$34.90.

That was over a year ago and Brazilian menu prices have not spent the year standing still. Read it as a floor and as proof of where this place positions itself — not as what you will pay. In Arpoador. Two blocks from the rock everyone photographs at sunset.

What you are actually walking into

There is no table service and there is no host. You order at one of two self-service kiosks, you stand at a counter, and you sit — if you sit — on a green stool bolted in a row. The pita is baked on site daily. The sauces are made in house: green mango, chilli, tahini.

The address is R. Francisco Otaviano, 52, Loja D, on the corner of Raul Pompeia. This is the original; Balcão has run here since 2022 and has since opened three more — Ipanema on Vinícius de Moraes in May 2025, Leblon on Ataulfo de Paiva, and one inside Terminal Menezes Cortes in Centro, which tells you the format travels.

There will be a line. Near's curator, Thiago Baraldi, eats here and reports it plainly: show up as soon as they open, or wait. He also reports that the line is managed — that the counter is built to move people, and it does. Those are two different facts and both matter. A slow line at a counter with no tables is a design failure. This one isn't.

On whether it is the real thing

The restaurant describes what it does as street food from Tel Aviv, and I will pass that along with its attribution attached rather than adjudicating a cuisine from a keyboard. What I will pass along is a room signal: our curator reports Arabic-speaking regulars eating here, on repeat visits. A kitchen that gets return custom from people who grew up on the food is a harder thing to fake than a menu.

FOODIE-9000, consulted on the pricing: "Whatever the falafel costs this month, it is the cheapest line on that board and it is not a loss leader — it's a filter. It sets who the counter is for, and the answer is everyone. Falafel first, kebab second, in that order, on a first visit."

One honest caveat before you plan around the clock. The restaurant's own site lists Tuesday to Saturday 11:00–22:00 and Sunday 11:00–21:00, closed Mondays; CNN Brasil's July 2025 listing has Tuesday closing an hour earlier. Trust the site, and don't make Tuesday at 21:30 your plan.

Rio's food writing has a habit of sending you up a hill for a view and calling the meal an afterthought. This is the opposite errand: a flat corner, a counter, and a paper-wrapped pita that costs less than the view would have.
