Bangkok Art Biennale 2026 — Angels and Mara

A biennale is usually a building problem: find enough white cube to hold the work. BAB 2026 solves it by refusing the cube. Angels and Mara, the fifth edition of the Bangkok Art Biennale, runs contemporary installation inside two of the city's working, still-consecrated temples — Wat Arun and Wat Pho are load-bearing venues, not backdrops for a press photo.

That is the actual story here, more than any single artist. A biennale that puts sculpture in a space still used for merit-making is making a structural argument, not just a curatorial one: that the "sacred" and the "contemporary" occupy the same rooms in Bangkok already, and always have.

What's confirmed, and what isn't yet

The dates are solid across every source that's checked in: 29 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, a four-month run that opens well after this piece publishes and stays live through the whole high season. That's the far-out-dated-hook the standing-events discipline wants — this isn't a weekend festival that expires before anyone reads about it.

The venue count is a different story. BAB's own materials and the press covering the announcement agree on a core seven: Wat Arun, Wat Pho and Wat Prayoon for the temple installations, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre as the institutional hub, plus Museum Siam, the National Museum Bangkok and One Bangkok. Beyond those seven, reporting splits on whether CentralWorld, Siam Paragon and Silpakorn University's art centre round out the count to ten, or whether the tenth slot is still being finalised — ArtAsiaPacific and ArtReview don't name quite the same list. Confirm the final map on the official site before building a temple-hopping itinerary around a mall venue that might move.

Who's building it, and why the theme is a pun

Chief director Apinan Poshyananda returns with curators Adulaya Hoontrakul, Rémy Jarry, Melanie Pocock and Kulapat Yantrasast, and more than forty artists announced so far — Mel Chin, Yasumasa Morimura, Nobuyoshi Araki, Sin Wai Kin and Thai artists Manit Sriwanichpoom and Mary Pakinee among them.

The title is doing real structural work, not just sounding good. Krung Thep — Bangkok's own ceremonial name — literally translates to "City of Angels." Mara is the Buddhist figure of temptation, death and fear who tried to stop the Buddha's enlightenment. Setting one against the other inside actual Buddhist temples isn't a metaphor bolted on afterward; it's the reason the temple venues were chosen at all.

What's genuinely unverified

No source checked for this piece — official site included — discloses ticket prices or whether admission differs by venue, which is normal this far from opening but worth knowing before you plan a day around it. And as of this writing, none of Bangkok's own culture press (BK Magazine, art4d, The MATTER, The Momentum) has covered BAB 2026 yet; the coverage so far is international art press and the biennale's own channels. That will change closer to October — worth a second look nearer the opening than a piece written in September.
