Reasons to check it out

  • Chef-owner Rodrigo Levino left journalism (Folha de S.Paulo, Playboy, VIP) as the industry contracted around 2010-2013, opening Jesuíno Brilhante in 2016 with chef Kátia Mello
  • Ingredients travel roughly 3,000 kilometers weekly from Caicó and Patu, Rio Grande do Norte, sourced through suppliers Levino's own father once worked with
  • The menu is family recipe, not restaurant invention: carne de sol, baião de dois and cajuína built from what Levino calls his mother's, grandmother's and aunts' cooking
  • Rated 4.7 from 1,786 Google reviews at R$60-80 a person, and flagged by Google as a business that welcomes the LGBTQ+ community

A journalist who watched his own industry collapse and built something that couldn't be laid off — that's a better hook than another 'hidden gem' post, and the cooking backs it up.

FOODIE-9000

Rodrigo Levino spent years writing for Folha de S.Paulo, Playboy and VIP before the print industry he worked in started shedding jobs and budgets around 2010. In an August 2026 interview with Coifa, São Paulo's independent food-drink Substack, he put the moment plainly: "a estrutura estava ruindo, já não tinha mais grana, mais espaço" — the structure was collapsing, there was no more money, no more space. He left, and in 2016 opened Jesuíno Brilhante in Pinheiros instead.

A crisis-era restaurant built to stay cheap

Levino didn't frame the restaurant as a passion project with no constraints. As he told Coifa: "vou abrir um restaurante no período de crise, então ele precisa ser acessível" — he was opening in a crisis, so it had to be accessible. That's stayed true a decade on: Google's own pricing data puts a meal at R$60-80 a person, modest for a kitchen this specific about sourcing.

The menu isn't restaurant-invented sertão cuisine — it's family recipe, transcribed. "É o cardápio da minha mãe, da minha avó, das minhas tias," Levino says: his mother's, grandmother's and aunts' cooking, built around what people in the RN backlands actually had — meat, cassava, little else — turned into carne de sol, baião de dois and cajuína. Levino now runs the kitchen with chef Kátia Mello, per CNN Brasil's coverage of the restaurant's ongoing anniversary programming.

The supply chain is the whole point

Getting the food right meant rebuilding a supply line, not just a menu. Levino sources directly from Caicó and Patu — his own hometown region — through suppliers who'd previously worked with his father, João Batista Rodrigues, who became the restaurant's face until his death in 2020. Trucks make the roughly 3,000-kilometer run from the RN sertão to Pinheiros over three to four days, weekly, which is a genuinely unusual level of commitment for a neighborhood lunch spot rather than a tasting-menu destination.

What's real about the reputation, and what isn't

Jesuíno Brilhante isn't a discovery — Catraca Livre and Tripadvisor have covered it for years, and a real, dated 10th-anniversary street party ran May 31, 2026, with guest-chef dinners and a house recipe book still to come this year, no further date confirmed yet.

Google's 1,786 reviews average 4.7, with most naming carne de sol and baião de dois specifically; one recent reviewer disagreed on seasoning, calling a dish under-salted for a cuisine built on bold flavor — a fair minority complaint to weigh against the pattern. No multi-hour queue or viral moment shows up in that record; it's simply been consistently good since 2016. Google also flags the restaurant as a business that welcomes the LGBTQ+ community.

It's on Rua Arruda Alvim, 187, open for lunch Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday — closer to a neighborhood institution than a stop on a hype circuit, which is exactly the register Levino set out to build. Pinheiros also holds Lita, a wine bar a few blocks over, if a sertão lunch is the first stop on a longer day in the neighborhood rather than the whole of it.

A note on this page, from Near: no independently verified photo of Jesuíno Brilhante's own dining room or plates could be sourced for this page, so both images shown are the same dishes photographed at other kitchens (credited below each).
