Sipeos

Most non-alcoholic bars start from subtraction: take a normal bar, remove the alcohol, see what's left. Sipeos started from a different place entirely — a couple who quit drinking, then decided the gap they'd found in their own lives was worth building a business around.

Hetal and Dhruma Shah ran an e-commerce business selling curated non-alcoholic beverage brands before they had a room at all. Hetal had been an operations VP at Cleo and Postmates; Dhruma was in biotech. Both left those careers to build Sipeos as a physical café in a former Cocola Bakery space at Walnut Creek's Broadway Plaza, opening in late November 2024. That founder story matters here for the same reason it mattered at San Francisco's Ocean Beach Cafe: a bar built by someone solving their own problem tends to take the craft more seriously than one chasing a trend line.

The drinks are the actual test. Sipeos isn't a strictly dry room — wine and beer are still on the menu — but the program leans hard into the non-alcoholic side, with close to 30 zero-proof beers, wines and cocktails developed by West Bev Consulting, whose stated goal was to "center deliciousness and de-center alcohol" rather than treat the sober list as an afterthought. Signature drinks include the New-Groni, a non-alcoholic riff on a Negroni, the low-ABV Espresso Marti-No, and the Pica Pica — Seedlip Grove, house sangrita verde, lime, ginger, chili oil and habanero salt, which is a lot more construction than the average mocktail bothers with. That's the detail that separates a serious NA program from a syrup-and-garnish afterthought: bitterness, acidity and heat doing the work alcohol usually does.

Food is the other half of the pitch, and it's not an afterthought either. Sipeos bills itself as the Bay Area's first vegetarian Mediterranean restaurant, with a menu — curated by executive chef Blair Warsham of Wildseed — built around mezze platters, hummus and dips, artisan pinsa flatbreads, skewers, rice bowls, veggie burgers and vegan and gluten-free options pulling from Moroccan, French, Italian, Greek and Turkish traditions with what the team calls a California twist. It's a "health-forward" register rather than a punitive one — nothing here reads as a consolation prize for skipping the wine list.

The room itself was designed by San Francisco studio ROY, working with what they describe as a goddess-inspired aesthetic inside the shell of a bakery that closed down. It seats 70, and there's a pet-friendly outdoor patio that puts you right in the foot traffic of Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek's open-air shopping and dining strip — a setting with none of the Outer Richmond's fog-and-trek problem, for what that's worth to anyone weighing the two.

Two honest caveats. First, Sipeos isn't a fully dry bar the way Ocean Beach Cafe is — if you're specifically looking for a room with zero alcohol on the premises, this isn't quite that, though the non-alcoholic list is clearly the point of the program rather than a courtesy addition. Second, it's suburban Walnut Creek rather than Oakland or Berkeley proper, so if "East Bay" in your head means the flatlands, this is a longer drive than the name might suggest.

As of August 2026 it's holding a strong run — 238 reviews on Yelp with no sign of trouble, and steady coverage since opening, including a spot on a City of Walnut Creek list of the East Bay's most beautiful restaurants.
