The Bookshop That Beat Customs

The UK's oldest LGBT+ bookshop, on Marchmont Street since 1979. Still independent.

Every listing scanner in London mentions this shop for one week in February and one week in June, then forgets it exists. That's exactly backwards. The listing that matters is the one that's true in November: the UK's oldest LGBT+ bookshop is open Tuesday through Sunday, and it needs customers, not anniversaries.

Forty seats beneath a borrowed sky

A free planetarium by afternoon, telescopes after dark on USP's São Carlos campus.

Observatório Dietrich Schiel gives São Carlos two ways to look up: a planetarium in the afternoon and telescopes after dark. On USP's Área 1 campus, its reclining seats face a projection dome with surround sound. The public weekend programme began in February 2026.

Sitges Film Festival 2026 — 59th edition

Carrie at Fifty, Eleven Days in October

The 59th Sitges fantastic film festival runs 8–18 October 2026 across the town.

Brian De Palma's Carrie came out in 1976. Sitges is marking its fiftieth by putting it at the centre of the 59th edition of the festival, which runs from 8 to 18 October 2026 — eleven days, in a seaside town of narrow streets that spends the rest of the year not looking like a horror festival at all.

Bologna's Autonomous Space, Still Running

Bologna's self-managed social space, running its Tuesday market since 2003, no owner.

Bologna has carried the nickname "La Rossa" — the Red City — for most of a century, for reasons that run through electoral politics, a long tradition of cooperative and mutual-aid organizing, and a persistent, generations-deep habit of groups of people occupying empty buildings and turning them into something the city…
