Observatório Dietrich Schiel gives São Carlos two ways to look up: a planetarium in the afternoon and telescopes after dark. On USP's Área 1 campus, its reclining seats face a projection dome with surround sound. The public weekend programme began in February 2026.
The useful number is forty
Planetarium admission is free, according to CDCC's visitor information, checked on 21 September 2026. Sessions run Saturday and Sunday at 3pm and 4pm. Each holds 40 people. Tickets are distributed 30 minutes before each session, one per person physically present; arriving at that point doesn't guarantee a seat. Late entry is unavailable once the doors close.
Aim for the 3pm session and allow extra queue time. Bring a light layer: the room is cooled to 19–22°C. The official guidance recommends ages seven and up and flags darkness and loud passages. Rain usually leaves the projection running, though severe storms can interrupt power.
Telescope viewing is a separate Saturday/Sunday visit, 8pm–10pm, dependent on weather. Enter near Carlos Botelho and Visconde de Inhaúma; the planetarium's glass door is behind the observatory, beside the parking area. Check current notices before travelling.
