In 1968, members of a Sitges social club organised something they called the First International Week of Fantastic Cinema. It ran in their own hall. The 59th Sitges fantastic film festival runs 8–18 October 2026 across the town.

Brian De Palma's Carrie came out in 1976. Sitges is marking its fiftieth by putting it at the centre of the 59th edition of the festival, which runs from 8 to 18 October 2026 — eleven days, in a seaside town of narrow streets that spends the rest of the year not looking like a horror festival at all.

There is a corner in Sitges where the terrace tables face outward at the square instead of inward at the bar, and the entire evening's traffic funnels past them. Parrots has held that corner for over thirty years.
