Barraca da Dhéia

A barraca is not a bar with a view of the beach. It is the beach: a stall with a bar, a run of plastic chairs and umbrellas staked into the sand, a kitchen doing fried fish and a caipirinha, and — crucially — an owner who decides who gets treated well on that stretch of sand. Which is why one on Praia das Pitangueiras describing itself as "uma barraquinha delícia em Guarujá voltada para a nossa comunidade LGBTQIAP+" is doing something more consequential than it sounds. Somebody has taken a patch of Guarujá sand and made it explicitly ours.

Why a beach stall is infrastructure

The queer geography of the Baixada Santista has always been real and almost entirely unwritten — a kiosk here, a stretch of sand there, known by word of mouth and invisible to anyone who did not already have the phone number. That is now changing on paper. São Paulo's state tourism department runs a Mapa do Turismo LGBT, and the coast has been folded into it: Guarujá, São Vicente and Praia Grande all appear, along with Peruíbe, Itanhaém, Iguape and Iporanga. In the reporting on Guarujá's entry, Barraca da Dhéia is named as one of the city's support points for LGBTQIAPN+ visitors, alongside Barraca da Márcia É Show on Praia da Enseada and Quiosque 39.

Being on a government list is not the same as being good, and a map does not make a place welcoming. What it does is remove the deniability. A municipality that has put its name to this can be held to it, and a visitor who has never been to Guarujá now has somewhere to start that is not a listicle written by somebody who has never smelled the Enseada at low tide.

What is actually verifiable, and what is not

Two things worth stating plainly, because the internet is thin here and confident about it.

The address is Avenida Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca 1522, Pitangueiras, and the contact number listed is +55 13 99773-3751. That much is consistent across the directories that carry it.

The opening hours are not. One business directory lists it Monday to Friday, nine to six, and Saturday morning only — which is a set of office hours pasted onto a beach barraca, on a beach whose entire economy runs at weekends and in the afternoon. The same listing shows a five-star rating from zero reviews. Treat both as directory noise. Call the number before you plan a day around it, and if you want the reliable version, go on a hot Saturday afternoon, which is when a barraca on Pitangueiras is definitionally open.

When to go

Now, or in the next few weeks. September is the start of spring on this coast, and the barracas along Pitangueiras work best in the window after the weather turns and before the December crowds make the sand a negotiation. Guarujá is a ferry-and-a-short-drive from Santos, close enough that this belongs in the same weekend as the rest of the Baixada rather than a separate trip.
