The Jago

Passing Clouds ran in this building — the old Hackney Gazette printworks — from 2006 to 2016, hosting close to 10,000 events before developers forced its closure. A community campaign got it listed as an Asset of Community Value, which is the only reason what happened next was possible: when the developer priced the site out of reach, regular Kwame Otiende and Aaron Edwards put in a speculative bid anyway. It landed. The Jago opened roughly two and a half years later, the same walls, a new name.

The booking policy is deliberately wide: Time Out finds jam nights, open mics, funk, disco and world music sitting alongside club nights, and The Arts Desk has reviewed classical trumpet-and-harp recitals on the same stage more used to reggae and Afrobeat. That range is the point, not an accident — a venue built to replace one that ran 10,000 nights of everything doesn't narrow its own booking to one genre.

The venue nearly lost its licence over noise complaints from a neighbour, and spent tens of thousands of pounds on acoustic tests and soundproofing to keep it — an appeal that succeeded, with no further complaints logged since. It's the kind of dispute that ends most grassroots venues; this one didn't.

Entry runs cheap to mid-range for the door nights — cover charges start around £6 for smaller sessions, with ticketed gigs sold through Resident Advisor and Shotgun running higher depending on the booking — genuinely inexpensive by London live-music standards. Every Monday, 11am to 4pm, the venue also runs a free food bank, open regardless of whether you're there for the music.
