bar Das
A cocktail bar built by and for women, with a sliding-scale door for everyone else.
Motivos para visitarlo
- Founded January 2019 by Raquel Braga and Nina Veloso as an explicitly women- and queer-focused space
- Sliding-scale cover charge — cis men pay more, with part of that going to LGBTQIA+ and women's causes
- Runs film screenings and community events alongside the regular bar nights, not just drinks
- Tucked into Santa Cecília rather than the louder Augusta strip — a calmer, more intentional kind of night out
Most bars don't build their pricing around who's likely to feel safest in the room; bar Das does, on purpose. Since opening in January 2019, founders Raquel Braga and Nina Veloso have run the bar on a sliding-scale cover charge — cis men pay more at the door, with part of that going toward LGBTQIA+ and women's causes, a policy Catraca Livre treated as the defining fact about the place rather than a footnote to it. It's a small mechanic with an outsized effect on who actually shows up and how the room feels once they're there.
The bar itself is unpretentious rather than a design showcase — a small, intimate space in Santa Cecília, a neighborhood that reads as calmer and more residential than the louder nightlife strips further along Rua Augusta. That's part of the point: bar Das isn't trying to be the loudest option in the city, it's trying to be a specific kind of room for a specific kind of night, and the neighborhood choice matches that. Vegetarian and vegan-friendly food and cocktails round out the menu, built for people who might not always find themselves catered to at a standard boteco.
Beyond the regular bar nights, bar Das runs film screenings and community events, which puts it closer to a small cultural space with a bar attached than a bar that occasionally hosts something extra. That programming is part of what's kept it running as a genuinely community-oriented spot rather than a novelty concept — the sliding-scale door policy only means something if the space behind it is actually building the community it's pricing for.
It's a short trip from the nightlife density around Beco do Batman and Vila Madalena, but worth treating as its own destination rather than a stop on the way to somewhere louder — the whole appeal here is a different pace.
