Teatro Clube da Eskyna

Santos's Centro Histórico has spent the last several years accumulating the kind of small, stubbornly independent spaces that don't show up in a standard cruise-port write-up of the city — and Teatro Clube da Eskyna, on Rua Dom Pedro II, is one of the newer and more ambitious of them. It calls itself, plainly, a "Centro de Arte e Cultura Independente" — an independent art and culture center — with a tagline that reads as a mission statement as much as a slogan: "lugar de encontro, arte e transformação," a place for meeting, art, and transformation.

What that means in practice is a single address doing several jobs at once. There's a black-box theater space at the core of it, but wrapped around that is Brechó do Eskyna, a thrift and vintage clothing shop; Flor Discos, a record store; and Café com Linóleo, a café-bar that functions as the building's living room between shows. None of these feel like a landlord renting out spare corners — the combination is the actual concept, closer in spirit to a DIY arts collective that happens to have a fixed address than to a conventional theater with a gift shop bolted on.

The programming reflects that same refusal to specialize. In the same season, the space has hosted drag cabaret nights, rock concerts, and — during the city's Santos Verão 2026 program — a children's theater premiere, "Além do Espelho D'Água" ("Beyond the Water Mirror"). Its pre-Carnival Baile La Mascarada paired a DJ set from Rafa Rouxinol with staged interventions from the venue's own in-house research group, the kind of blended party-and-performance format that's hard to book into most conventional venues because it doesn't fit a single line item. A Tribuna, the main Santos daily, covered the space under a headline about it building a bridge to the national theater scene — a fair description of a young venue clearly trying to plug a small port city into a bigger circuit, not just serve the neighborhood.

Two honest caveats, in the spirit of not overselling a place this new. First, there's no official website with a real events calendar as of this writing — Instagram and Juicy Santos's regional listings are the actual way to find out what's on, which works but means a spontaneous visit is a bigger gamble here than at a venue with a published schedule. Second, and more simply: this space hasn't been open long enough to have accumulated the kind of independent critical record — the "here's what's actually good and what isn't" perspective from people who've been going for years — that a more honest Near piece would normally lean on. What's here is a first look at something that reads as genuinely interesting, not a settled verdict.

The clearest read on what the space actually does is its programming: Cabaret Latino, the recurring drag cabaret night it hosts, is a fair sample of the register — cheap early tickets, free entry if you turn up in drag, and a DJ who already knows the room. It sits in the same historic downtown stretch that's been the focus of Santos's slow, ongoing effort to make its Centro Histórico a destination in its own right rather than just the strip between the port and the beach — worth folding into a walk through that part of the city rather than treating as a separate trip.
