OT301

Amsterdam's old Film Academy trained cinematographers until 1999, when a group of artists broke in, stayed, and eventually bought the place from the city outright. That's OT301's whole shape in one sentence: not a squat that got evicted into a museum piece, and not a club that bought itself some outlaw branding.

The EHBK association that runs it paid actual money for Overtoom 301 in 2006, got the city's own Amsterdamprijs voor de Kunsten the year after, and kept operating it exactly the way it always had — a self-managed building with a concert room, a cinema, a gallery and workspaces for around fifteen resident artists.

Four rooms, one building, no boss

The public side of OT301 breaks into four spaces. Studio 301 is the concert and club room — up to a few hundred people, drum & bass and hardcore and post-punk nights sharing a calendar with dance rehearsals by day. Ventilator Cinema/Bar runs screenings and discussions in what's genuinely still a converted film-school space. 4bid Gallery handles exhibitions and performance art.

Where the long-running vegan kitchen De Peper used to feed the building — it closed in 2023 after decades of communal cooking — Café Gilde now runs lunch service in its place, a real change worth knowing before you go looking for a restaurant that isn't there anymore.

None of the four is corporate-run. There's no single owner collecting a margin off any of it; EHBK's members work the door, the bar and the booking between them. That's not a marketing story, it's the actual org chart.

What the entrance and the reviews actually tell you

OT301 is upfront that it runs no formal door policy — no dress code, no guest list, no bouncer sorting people by outfit. In practice, the building's own door locks, so you buzz and someone lets you in rather than walking through an open entrance, and there's no elevator across its several floors, which matters if stairs are a problem for you.

The Google reviews back up the vibe more than they complain about it: 4.6 stars across 580 ratings as of September 2026. One recent visitor praised a jungle drum & bass night and called the Czech Budvar on tap "cheap and tasty"; another left a phone behind on a techno night and reported staff tracking it down and returning it without fuss. A regular of a decade says the sound and lighting have only gotten better. That's a consistent read across years, not one good night inflating the average.

The date worth putting in your calendar

Far-out and confirmed: on Saturday 9 November 2026, 10pm–3am, Power vs Power brings The Machine to the Netherlands for the first time, a hardcore/drum & bass/breakcore/industrial lineup including Marxman, Distorted, Folie a Deux, Inhumanoid and DJ Thyroid. Doors are €7 in advance, €10 at the door — and the whole night is a benefit, with proceeds going toward psychological support for children in Polish orphanages affected by recent flooding. It's the kind of bill OT301 has been running since before "benefit rave" was a genre of party: loud, cheap to get into, and not actually about the door money.
