Gay's the Word

The Bookshop That Beat Customs

The UK's oldest LGBT+ bookshop, on Marchmont Street since 1979. Still independent.

Every listing scanner in London mentions this shop for one week in February and one week in June, then forgets it exists. That's exactly backwards. The listing that matters is the one that's true in November: the UK's oldest LGBT+ bookshop is open Tuesday through Sunday, and it needs customers, not anniversaries.

Rev.Sep 7, 2026The Gilbert & George Centre — Your Visit+5

The Gilbert & George Centre

Art for All, Thursday to Sunday

Gilbert & George built their own free gallery off Brick Lane. It opens four days a week.

The most useful thing about this building is a constraint, so I'll lead with it instead of burying it under the architecture: the Gilbert & George Centre is open Thursday to Sunday, 11:00 to 17:45, and closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Turn up on a Tuesday and you get a door. That is not a footnote on a page about…

Institute of Contemporary Arts

Founded To Argue With The Academy

A 1946 anti-establishment institute working out of John Nash's aristocratic terrace.

Read the address before the programme. The most consistently anti-establishment art institution in Britain has spent fifty-eight years operating out of a Regency palace terrace built for the aristocracy, four hundred metres from Buckingham Palace, on a ceremonial road designed for processions. Nothing about that is…

Rev.Sep 7, 2026La Camionera — official site (hours, accessibility, walk-in policy)+8

La Camionera

Not Dalston. Well Street, Hackney.

A lesbian bar built like a Madrid café, on Well Street in Hackney — not Dalston.

A bar tells you what it thinks of itself in the first material choice it makes, and La Camionera's is a set of hand-painted tiles behind the bar that its co-owner made herself. Not commissioned, not sourced from a supplier catalogue — Clara Solis painted them, working from Portuguese azulejos and Picasso's Minotaur…

Rev.Sep 7, 2026Wikipedia — Truman's Brewery+1

Old Truman Brewery

Beer Vats to Brick Lane Sprawl

A 17th-century brewery turned Brick Lane's market, gallery, and vintage-shop sprawl.

By the 1850s, the Truman's brewery on Brick Lane was the largest in the world — a genuinely industrial-scale operation that had been brewing on this site since the 17th century. It survived that long by being good at exactly one thing, and it stopped being good at it eventually: the brewery closed for good in 1989…

Studio Voltaire

The Chapel Clapham Turned Into a Gallery

A 1994 artist-run non-profit, housed since 1999 in a former Methodist chapel.

Start with the frame, because the frame is the argument. A Methodist chapel is a specific kind of structure — load-bearing walls built to hold a congregation still, a nave designed to point attention one direction, toward a pulpit. Studio Voltaire took that shell in 1999 and repointed it: same walls, same volume…

The Actors

Everyone still calls it the Marlborough

A Kemptown pub-theatre the council protected by law — still misfiled under its old name.

A pub does not usually need a council ruling to survive a change of hands. This one did. In January 2022, Brighton & Hove City Council listed the building at 4 Prince's Street as an Asset of Community Value.pdf) — a legal status that forces a delay and a right to bid before the freehold can be sold out from under the…

97 Stoke Newington Road was The Pubb until it closed, reopened briefly under that name in late 2024, and then closed again. In June 2026 it became The Common Press Dalston — a second site for the queer intersectional bookshop that's run its original Shoreditch shop on Bethnal Green Road since 2021. Same floor plate…

Sep 7, 2026Yatzer — The Pilgrm hotel, Paddington+4

The Pilgrm

300 hours to strip a staircase back to 1850

Stripped of minibars, robes and A/C on principle, one minute from Paddington station.

The Pilgrm opened in November 2017 in a cluster of Victorian buildings a minute's walk from Paddington station, restored with the kind of specificity that makes a hotel worth naming rather than just booking: 50 layers of paint stripped from a cast-iron balustrade, 300 man-hours on the wooden staircase alone…

V&A East Museum

Two V&A Easts. This Is the Stratford One

Free to walk into, ticketed for the headline show — and not the Hackney Wick Storehouse.

Two things about this building are true at once and listings tend to carry only the first. Entry is free, permanently, with no booking. The exhibition everyone is coming for is not.

Rev.Sep 7, 2026V&A East Storehouse — Plan your visit+11

V&A East Storehouse

You Can Walk Into the Store Room

A working V&A store you walk into free — but the David Bowie Centre now costs £5.

The V&A built a building where the storage is the exhibit. Four levels of the old London 2012 broadcast centre, 16,000 square metres of racking, and a walkway that puts you level with the shelves. You walk in off Parkes Street for nothing, and nobody checks a ticket.

Wilton's Music Hall

The Hall Hidden Behind the Houses

An 1859 music hall built behind a row of Whitechapel houses. Still doing 300 shows a year.

Rev.Sep 7, 2026Borough Market+2

Borough Market

Trading Since 1276

London's oldest food market, trading in some form since 1276, built around real stalls.

There's been a market on or near this site since at least 1276, when it's first recorded as trading on London Bridge itself before being pushed south onto Borough High Street. That's the detail every Borough Market write-up leads with, and it's worth leading with again, because it changes how the place should actually…

Boxpark Shoreditch

Containers That Never Left

Shipping containers stacked into a food court that outlasted its own 'meanwhile' license.

Boxpark opened in 2011 with an expiration date built into the concept: 61 recycled shipping containers, stacked two high, on a site the developer only had a temporary lease for. The whole pitch was "meanwhile use" — fill dead land with something interesting until the real development happens. Fifteen years on, the…

A Grade II-listed caff on Bethnal Green Road, run by the same family since 1900.

Priamo Pellicci started working the counter here in 1900; after his death in 1931, his wife Elide raised seven children in the flat upstairs while running the café below — her initial is the chrome "E" still on the fascia. The Lucky Saint

A Pub Built Around Not Drinking

A Fitzrovia pub built by an alcohol-free brand, so skipping booze never feels exceptional.

Most pubs that stock a non-alcoholic beer treat it as a single line at the bottom of the tap list, there for the one friend who's driving. The Lucky Saint inverts that: it's a pub built by an alcohol-free beer brand, opened in 2023 on Devonshire Street in Fitzrovia, where the 0.5% lager sits on the bar next to…

TOAD Bakery

Renamed by a lawyer's letter, not a rebrand

Camberwell's queue-round-the-block bakery started life as Frog, until a lawyer stepped in.

TOAD started as Frog Bakery in 2021, a pop-up before it had a shop. It became TOAD after chef Adam Handling's restaurant The Frog sent a trademark cease-and-desist — a small legal footnote that says something real about how fast this place grew. One turntable, Bradley Zero's own vinyl, and a Caribbean kitchen in a Peckham warehouse.
